3 DU teachers exonerated in campus unrest case

A Dhaka court today overturned the sentences of three Dhaka University teachers and acquitted them of charges of instigating the August 2007 unrest on the campus during the emergency. They are former Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (Duta) president Prof Sadrul Amin and former general secretary Prof Anwar Hossain and former DU Social Science Faculty dean Prof Harun-or-Rashid. Judge Mohammad Abul Bashar of the First Additional Metropolitan Session judge’s Court passed the order. On January 22 , Third Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Rabbani sentenced the three teachers to two years’ rigorous imprisonment for violating Emergency Power Rules. But they were released from the prison the same day after then president Iajuddin Ahmed pardoned them.
